Booi Brothers Petroleum (BBP) makes history with significant hydrocarbon discovery in South Africa. BBP is proud to announce a significant milestone in South Africa’s energy sector. The company has successfully drilled the country’s first officially recognised hydrocarbon (gas and oil) well in Vhurivhuri Village, Thulamela Local Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality, Limpopo.

The current well, designated as D-512 and licensed under ER262, has reached a depth of 1100 metres as of December 05, 2024. The drilling team is working diligently to achieve the target depth of 1300 metres.

While a minor delay occurred due to the water intersection and change of drilling method, the crew has detected substantial hydrocarbon reserves, aligning with initial expectations. As the drilling progresses, BBP remains committed to responsibly extracting these valuable resources to contribute to South Africa’s energy security and economic growth.

Joerg Enge, Principal at Pytheas fulfilling the role of the Project Manager at Booi Brothers Petroleum (BBP), emphasised the company’s bold decision to venture into uncharted territory. “BBP took a significant risk by drilling in a completely unexplored area, but the success of this endeavour underscores our entrepreneurial spirit,” Enge stated.

Overcoming numerous challenges was crucial to the project’s success. BBP had to source specialised equipment not readily available in South Africa, a task expertly handled by drilling operator Torque Africa Group.

Additionally, environmental considerations led to the relocation of the drilling site. The new location presented its own geological challenges, including multiple water encounters that slowed the drilling process.

However, the collaborative efforts of the drillers, BBP, and project management team ensured that these obstacles were effectively addressed. Once Well D-512 is fully drilled, BBP will release a comprehensive report detailing the significant hydrocarbon discovery. Further testing will be conducted to assess the well’s potential. Based on the results, a decision will be made regarding future operations.

BBP remains committed to environmental responsibility and has implemented measures to ensure the proper transportation and disposal of drilling waste, as outlined in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) document.

The company’s dedication to employee and environmental safety has been a cornerstone of the project, exemplified by the straightforward approach taken by CEO, Phindulo Peter Booi and his team.
