Booi Brothers Petroleum (BBP), a subsidiary of Booi Holdings, broke ground for an oil drilling well at the first discovered area, ER262, on June 19, 2024. This is South Africa’s first officially recognised well, and it is situated in Vhurivhuri Village, Thulamela Local Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality, Limpopo.
Oil spills have been discovered in Limpopo over the years, particularly around Thulamela and Vhembe District. Hydrocarbons were detected in shallow water boreholes, along with living oil on the surface during wet seasons. BBP has conducted over a decade of exploration in the Vhembe district using a variety of activities, including the use of non-invasive geophysical investigation methods such as seismic reflection, which is a method of exploration geophysics that employs seismology principles to estimate the properties of the earth’s subsurface from reflected seismic waves.
According to BBP CEO Peter Booi, this project will revolutionise both the business and the nation’s oil and gas industry. “We are all really happy and enthusiastic about this project as a family. We started working on this project in 2012, and the Petroleum Agency of South Africa approved our initial application on July 12, 2013, after it was received on January 18, 2013”.
It is critical to acknowledge the traditional leadership of King Musanda Vho Sumbana and Chief Thovhela Mphaphuli, who are unwavering supporters
of the ER262 project. The well is an important milestone not just for BBP and its stakeholders, but also for the entire Vhurivhuri community. The exploration project has gained unanimous support from the region’s traditional and political leaders, who regard it as a great opportunity for economic independence. BBP is hoping that this will result in increased employment and infrastructure development.
Torque Africa Group (Pty) Ltd is the technical partner in charge of ensuring that all site clearance and drilling are carried out safely and in an environmentally friendly manner. The company has substantial oil drilling experience and is supported by a trustworthy team of engineers and scientists who specialise in hydrocarbon analysis and extraction. “I am excited to start this exciting project on South African shores, and I believe it will lead to a more diverse energy efficiency solution and boost economic growth,” said Bernice Roets, Torque Africa project manager.
Special attention is paid to the health and safety of all on-site workers, and any potential environmental damage is a concern for everyone participating in the project.
